Ten Questions: Georgie McBurnie (Georgie Femme)

01. Why did you start in this business we call show?
It wasn’t really a conscious decision, making music is just what I’ve always done. To paraphrase Muhammad Ali: “Grass grows, birds fly, I write funk-infused pop-rock tunes.”

02. What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
Nature, mostly. Especially forests. I love the feeling of being connected to everything and everyone when you’re miles away from anything.

03. What is your favourite swear word?
Yoghurt-Cock.

04. What would have been the worst possible day for you to sleep through the alarm?
Probably one of the ones when I did.

05. Presley or Costello?
Presley.

06. What was the one gig (yours or someone else’s) that made time still for you?
The Brian Jonestown Massacre at Concorde 2 in October last year did this for me. At the end of the set, they had ten guitarists on stage all building this wall of noise together. They even had the stage techs playing with them, just building up this gorgeous fuzzy feedback loop for like twenty minutes. It was so hypnotic, it felt like they were taking part of a collective psychedelic experience and pulling the whole crowd into their trip.

07. What sound or noise do you love?
The bubbling sound in the intro to LEMONADE by SOPHIE.

08. It’s 3am. The promoter stole all the money. Two people turned up to the gig. Your name is spelled wrong on the poster. It’s raining. What makes you get up tomorrow and do it all over again?
Mindless optimism. Every terrible promoter you work with is a terrible promoter you know not to work with in the future. Thank God Brighton has some who are great at what the do!

09. Where do all the odd socks go?
Why does this feel like the set-up to an episode of Doctor Who?

10. What will it say on your tombstone?
I can’t call it, but I would be neither surprised nor disappointed if it were an obscure reference to The Simpsons or something. “I had a friend called Georgie, she died, she died. Mom said she was sleeping, she lied, she lied…”
