Chris SezAs PIB towers closes its doors for the Christmas period it’s time to reflect on the last year of the Brighton music scene.

Whilst a curtailed gig going year, honourable mentions to Ditz at The Albert, Gulls at The Caz and ARXX at Green Door Store.

Memories from these gigs have lasted. Whilst gigs post-March have been at a premium and socially distanced, there has been new music released this year, fortunately.

The new album from Porridge Radio which garnered mainstream exposure via the Mercury Prize was a highlight as they built upon the promise of their debut album. Artists we’ve followed since our zine days have released essential new material: Ditz, Matt Finucane, Young Francis Hi Fi, The Hell Beings, ARXX, take a bow!

Punk and Post-Punk have been particularly strong this year so shout-outs to:

  • Attestor (two EPs this year!)
  • Gulls (SHAME SHAME SHAME probably the best track of the year)
  • Vanilla Giver
  • Austerity

2020 has been a shit sandwich but if we all work together and do the boring but important COVID-19 prevention measures, we will support the local scene, venues and bands so that 2021 can be the start of the beginning towards rebuilding it and hopefully being part of crowds enjoying bands with our friends sooner rather than later.

Chris Sez and Plugged In Brighton wish you, our readers, a safe, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you at the gig in 2021 (fingers crossed).
