GENN – Mackerel’s Funky Mission
Fish in music, eh? Well… there was the singer from Marillion but he was named Fish, not an actual one. Those wall mounted monstrosities that lip-synched to old songs?
Fear not, GENN’s new song is infinitely better than the 80s prog rocker and plastic tat. Mackerel’s Funky Mission is a Summer infused paean to freedom, being where you want to be. A meditation to the Sun. The Mediterranean calling. Malta via Spain.
Vocalist Leona says of the track:
I think Mackerel’s Funky Mission is an escapism mechanism…. you sort of pretend to be someone else – in this case a fish – to escape from a current situation. It’s fun to pretend you’re something else and write from that perspective. It was also inspired by the lockdown as I wanted to be a fish just to be able to travel, and also by my love for the sea. I tried to be as visual as possible with the lyrics and the story
Vocals spoken as much as sung over a psych infused shimmering soundscape conjuring up Summers past and present. The sea is tranquil and inviting. Dive in!
The Liminal EP follows in a few weeks, compiling this track, previous releases Feel and 23rd March and three other tracks. Get this to get ready for the 30th.
